You've worked hard all year, put in the necessary overtime and
shown due loyalty. It's clear you're in line for a sizeable pay
rise.
OR ARE YOU?
There are lots of reasons that pay rises are granted each year
and most of them are within your control. It's just a matter of
understanding the way the processes work.
As loyal and hardworking as you are, if you're not actually
making a difference to the company's bottom line you've got a
harder argument ahead of you.
Here are some things you should keep in mind.
8 HOT PAY RISE TIPS
1. Give your boss due warning; Set up an appointment ahead of
time so you can both prepare and ask your boss to set aside 30
minutes so you don't feel rushed.
2. Look the part; Dress like you're going for a job interview.
You want to show them that you consider this a serious
discussion, one that neither of you should take lightly.
3. Bring your own ammunition; Bring along whatever you need to
justify your case, performance reports, memo's.. and make quite
a few notes beforehand so you aren't left thinking on the spot.
4. Go in positively; Assure your boss at the outset that you
appreciate your job.
5. List your assets; Have on hand a typed list of the
contributions you feel you have made, however small over the
past year and leave it with them when you depart. Don't just
repeat your position description - this is your chance to
highlight the new contributions you have made.
6. Ask, don't demand; Be careful how you word yourself. Saying,
"Do you think you might consider giving me a pay rise?" may work
better than, "I'm worth $5,000.00 more."
7. Forget the sad story; Your boss doesn't want to hear about
your budget worries. Put your case professionally and
objectively. They need to feel that you have earned it.
8. Don't put your boss on the spot; Never pressure your boss for
an answer right away. Give them time to consider your list and
consult their budget. Your boss must feel in control at all
times.
