Irish Claddagh Rings and Famous Fingers

18 Feb 2008 03:49:33
| Corey Duncan

What do President Ronald Reagan and the lead singer for the rock band Oasis have in common. The same thing that President John F. Kennedy and the band U2 have in common. They have all worn or currently wear Irish Claddagh rings. This unique symbol of friendship, love and loyalty has worked its way into all parts of American culture. Beyond its noted symbolism in the form of a crown mounted above hands clasping a heart, the Claddagh represents much more for the Irish people. It is a link to their beloved country Ireland, and an indication of their great independence and the fondness that they have for their country.

And though the Irish have settled throughout the world, many Irish feel a fondness for their country that is easily expressed in what has become Ireland's most recognized and celebrated symbol, the Claddagh ring. This easily would explain the rings previously worn by Bono of U2 fame, and even John Wayne, the Duke. But we must not forget previous British monarchs and royalty whose fingers have been adorned by this wonderful symbol. This would include Queen Victoria, Queen Victoria and Edward VII. Furthermore, Princess Grace of Monaco has also been spotted with the ring upon her finger.

Despite all the luminaries and dignitaries that have worn this symbol, it seems the most recognized wearer, especially amongst the younger crowd, is Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show highlighted the ring as having special powers and was worn extensively throughout the show by Buffy and her love Angel, and is now worn by many legions of fans.

Regardless of whether it represents love, friendship, loyalty a connection with Ireland, or simply a love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Irish Claddagh ring has found its way into the hearts of people throughout the world.
