Evidence of Global Warming - What You Need To Know

18 Feb 2008 04:38:22
| Jeff Plante

Many people around the world continue to deny the negative impact global warming has on our atmosphere. Evidence of global warming around the world seems to run contrary to this belief. Around the world, temperatures are the highest they've ever been on record, glaciers in arctic regions are rapidly melting, and disease-spreading insects such as mosquitoes are thriving due to the warmer temperatures.

The heat wave that is taking place in many regions of the world is a strong piece of evidence of global warming. Temperatures which have continued to increase in recent years unfortunately have not prompted the correct precautions needed to prevent them from increasing even more.

Global warming is partly believed to result from the release of carbon dioxide and methane that occurs during the burning of fossil fuels. They also result from the cars we drive, which is why there are many efforts by environmental groups to convert our cars to run on alternative fuel sources. In direct relation, deforestation is preventing the absorption of carbon dioxide so that it just continues to build.

Glaciers have been experiencing rapid melting due to increased temperatures. Low-lying areas are beginning to fall victim to rising water levels, and other areas are being threatened to eventually be underwater in the years to come.

Another threat to the world is the spreading of disease that is beginning to increase. Evidence of global warming is showing that mosquitoes, insects known to carry many diseases, are experiencing much longer breeding seasons. Unpredictable atmospheric events, such as hurricanes, create large amounts of standing water and damp areas, which are favorable conditions for insect breeding. Malaria is the primary concern since mosquitoes are known to carry the disease and have the ability to spread it easily to humans. The West Nile Virus is another big concern, especially in regions that have seen an increase in the number of mosquitoes.

Any educated person can see that the evidence of global warming is quite solid. Many of us are living in areas experiencing some of the following changes: higher average temperatures, longer summer seasons, heat waves, hurricane or tropical storm threats, or the threat of floods as a result of melting glaciers. Although the evidence for global warming may not seem to be much of a threat for some, it should be considered that these conditions are expected to get worse as the preventative measures are not being taken seriously.
