The meta tags 'description' and 'keywords' used to be the main
important thing for searchengine spiders after the title tag in
the old days. Now the last few years we've seen a huge dropback
because of meta spam. Webmasters tricked the spiders by using
keywords that we're popular but totally not relevant to their
site.
Meta tags are a part of HTML that the surfer never sees. They
are not included for the surfer's benefit and their contents are
not printed to the screen. The main use of meta tags is to
provide information for the search engines to use when the
spider evaluates a page's content.
Most smaller search engines still use these meta tags, but also
Yahoo and (especially) MSN. On some SEO forums there were
speculations of the return of the meta tags in Google. SEO
experts noticed Google using the meta tag description in the
results.
This means that most likely Google gives the meta tags another
try or at least gives some level of value to it.
Here are some useful tips:
- Make sure you write a good description that encourages people
to click on your link in the search engine results. - Both
meta-tag description & keywords should be related to your
website. - If you're a small website owner you could try to get
maximum traffic by focussing on misspelled keywords. - Keep the
meta tag keywords below 15 keywords. - Do NOT spam ! Don't
repeat the same keyword twice, not in your meta description or
your meta keywords tag.
