Many people get into a home based business because they want to do what they love. Yet, there are a number of things in having a home based business that makes it more of a business than a pleasure. Yet there are some simple rules to follow that can make your home based business more enjoyable even in the harder times.

First rule of home based business success: there is nothing so bad that it won’t look better tomorrow. Scarlet O’Hara said it best that “Tomorrow is another day.” Many times you will feel like you are just sitting still and not getting anywhere. Don’t give up and be patient. Each day you work hard will make it a little better, and things are sometimes clearer in the morning.

Second rule of home based business success: keep who you are out of what your business is. That means keep your personal identity separate from your business identity. Many people who love what they do become so enmeshed in the work that there is no separating one from the other. We all need to find things outside of our jobs to give us a sense of self-worth. This way, if things get stymied or difficult, your happiness doesn’t go with it.

Third rule of home based business success: “I think I can. I think I can,” should become your mantra. We all see the roadblocks in front of us, but remember that there is always another route. Don’t let others’ limitations stop you from your goals. And for that matter, don’t let your own self-imposed limitations stop you. Think of another way to do it. Take control of your business - don’t let it control you.

Fourth rule of home based business success: set realistic expectations and really think about what you want. Ever heard the saying, “be careful what you wish for”? If you set a goal make sure it is really what you want. Sometimes we set goals that we think we should want, and then we get there and don’t know what to do with the result.

Fifth rule of home based business success: stand by your decisions. After all, who knows your business needs better than you? No one. Sometimes a lot of things happen that make you second guess yourself, even though you are making a great decision. Learn to drown out the extra noise and distractions so that you know you are making the best decision for your business to reach the goals you really want.
