In many households dogs and cats leave at peace and are even friends. If you are bringing a new dog or cat into your home, there are ways to make the introductions go more smoothly.
First, make sure any new dog you adopt is cat-safe. Adopt from an organization that tests dogs to ensure they can live peacefully with cats. If you already have a dog and you are looking to add a cat into the mix, find a friend with a cat that you can test your dog with, if you don't already know how your dog will respond to cats. Have the cat in the carrier and the dog on the leash. If the dog remains calm, remove the cat from the carrier but keep the dog on the leash. Allow your canine to sniff the cat. If the dog remains calm, allow the cat freedom. If your dog passes these tests, she is a good candidate for a cat-friend!
When you are getting a cat used to a dog, place your dog in his crate. Give him a distraction, like a kong, and allow the cat into the room. Your cat will approach the dogs at her own pace and this allows her to get accustomed to the dogs while still feeling safe.
When introducing the dog to the cat, put the cat into a carrier and put the dog on the leash. Allow your dog to walk towards the carrier, sniff it for a few moments, and then walk away. Repeat this a few times the same day and the next day if necessary. Then allow them to meet "in person," with the dog on the leash and the cat loose.
Keep your dog and cat in separate rooms for a few days. Taking the time to do proper introductions will pay off for many years to come. Your dog and cat may become the best of friends or they may ignore each other, but either of these will provide a peaceful household where you do not have to choose between your dog and your cat.
