Have you ever felt that burning feeling or pressure in the
middle of your chest after your meals or after putting your head
down or sitting up? If you think that it is a normal feeling,
well think twice because you might be experiencing heartburn.
Heartburn is pain behind the breastbone which can also be felt
at the same level in the mid-line of the back. Some people think
that this only happens to pregnant women or elderly, but
actually heartburn can happen to anyone at any age. Others also
think that heartburn has something to do with the heart but in
fact it is not. It is simply a digestive problem. When a person
experiences heartburn, it has something to do with his posture
and meal habits.
The sharp, burning sensation caused by heartburn happens when
acid comes up the esophagus. The esophagus does not have a
protective lining like the stomach, so when the acid comes up,
the tendency is the esophagus can be damaged especially if this
happens frequently. In order to avoid serious problems in the
future, heartburn should be treated and avoided. And the most
important and helpful aspects of treatment can be done by doing
and observing the following: stop smoking, avoid becoming
overweight, diet, sleeping, and posture.
Many people have the habit of smoking after every meal because
it makes them feel good. But little do they know that it is not
a best thing to do. After a meal, one should not smoke because
this will increase the chances of suffering from heartburn
especially when the stomach is so full.
Overweight people are more likely to suffer from heartburn. So
improving ones eating habits should be done because weight
reduction is actually one of the most important remedies to
avoid heartburn. Eating fruits, vegetables, and high-fiber foods
is good as well as regular exercise to help lose weight.
Heartburn can be triggered more by drinking or eating foods such
as acidic fruit drinks, too hot drinks, fatty and spicy meals,
whiskey, and brandy. These should be excluded from your diet and
eating little and often is better than to skip a meal and eating
too much in another. And when eating, observe not to eat too
fast, and foods should be chewed well so as not to suffer from
indigestion.
Sleeping in an empty stomach is not good and also when sleeping
in a full stomach. Before going to bed, evening meal should be
digested well first. See to it also that the head of the bed is
raised by 6 inches because gravity helps to keep the acid in the
stomach where it should be so as not to worsen heartburn
condition.
One’s posture can also be a contributing factor to experience
heartburn. Bending from the waist or stooping just after meals
should be avoided instead, it is better to try and bend from the
knees and make sure that the back is straight. Eating meals
slumped in front of the television is not advisable, instead
meals should be taken while sitting on an upright chair.
Conquering heartburn could be easy if one has the determination
and the self-discipline. It is always said that an ounce of
prevention is better than a pound of cure. So try to observe the
following in order not be at risk to have heartburn and to have
a healthy living.
