Jeff Gordon won the Subway 500 on Sunday and swept the seasons two races at Martinsville Speedway known for being the oldest, shortest (.526 miles), and tightest run in NASCAR's high end stock car series. Jeff succeeded only after holding on to a three-lap dash with Tony Stewart who finished as the runner up. He beat Stewart to the finish line by .235 seconds.

Tony's placement allowed him to gain 15 points in the Chase over Jimmie Johnson who placed third in the race. There were other Chase contenders, though, who suffered setbacks including Mark Martin, Carl Edwards and Rusty Wallace. Martin and Edwards had finished 34th and 26th, respectively. Wallace was running fifth when he crashed on a restart with 19 laps to go which eventually caused him to finish 19th.
