How to make Marriage Work while Being a Business Owner

24 Feb 2008 12:33:29
| Cheri Alguire

One of the biggest challenges for women who run their own businesses while raising a family is keeping their marriage alive. It can be very difficult to find the balance between your work life and your home life, particularly while nurturing your marriage and your children. The key is to be open and honest with your spouse, and to keep the lines of communication open.

Make it clear to your husband that you need his support, and that you need him to be open with you as well. Ask him to be understanding when you go through particularly busy periods with your business, however, don't forget to return the favor when he needs you to cut him a little slack. It helps when you are able to talk openly and honestly about your business as well as your marriage.

It's great to have the type of marriage in which you can discuss your business life, but it is also important to remember that there are certain times when you should leave work out of the picture. For example, the bedroom should be an off limit zone when it comes to discussing business. If necessary, create certain areas in your home or times during your day in which you don't discuss business at all, only family stuff.

Don't forget to take care of your romantic relationship as well. Make dates for the two of you to enjoy together and reconnect as a couple. Leave the kids at home and make the evening all about the two of you reconnecting and re-energizing as a couple.

Just like a successful business, a successful marriage takes hard work and commitment. Do not neglect your husband or your marriage: make the time that you have together quality time and make the most of every moment.

How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It teaches couples how to get closer in ways that don't require "trying to turn a man into a woman." Rich in stories of couples who have turned their marriages around, and full of practical advice about the behaviors that make and break marriages, this essential guide will help couples find love beyond words.
