The word Electronic commerce or commonly known as "e-commerce," is buzzing everywhere on the net and business world right now. While many of us feel that it is something very difficult or out of the world that most of us can't understand, it on the other hand is not. Don't let the difficult jargon intimidate you. E-commerce is simply the commerce been done in our every day life but the mode is somewhat different, taking things that you already have been but through mail or over the telephone and doing those things on the Internet or simply using the Internet to do business transactions with your customers. Though at a time when doing the business transactions in the real manner 'person to person' is not much safe, e-commerce to many is far way fantasy that many of us have not just thought over. It may be something not in every company's mind but in a few years it'll be part of every company doing the business. In fact, there have been a cliché that is been said by various IT giants all over the world, 'In the next years there would be only two businesses, one who would be on internet and the other who would be in the business'. So, keeping the rapid growth of technology entering into our lives, we can say for sure that a time would come when the above saying would be true and the businesses that aren't on the Internet will be as far out of the mainstream as a business without a telephone number is today.
E-commerce means a lot of different things to different people, while for businesses it has been like starting a whole new business from the scratch and to the customers it has been like a whole new buying experience on the net. Thus, a lot of syndromes have been attached with e-commerce on both sides, business as well as the customer side. Similarly, there have been much less overheads in terms of money as well as in terms of staff when you are doing it on internet, while on the businessman side, you can do things with e-commerce that would be prohibitively expensive or logistically difficult to do through older channels of commerce. An e-commerce website, where you can sell/buy your products is naturally a 24/7 operation, unlike a traditional 9-to-5 per 6 days company. So, it is at one place very much easier to maintain a website and up to date it with your company profile and the products that you are having than doing the same in the real business. But the advantages of having your e-commerce website because of the interactivity and completeness can engage customers more directly, giving them a feeling of empowerment and control that is difficult through other methods of doing business. You can start and operate an e-commerce business for less money than initiating a whole new business. Though the dotcom burst few years back have adverse effects on all such initial hypes that e-commerce would replace the real business and many of the dotcom/e-commerce companies who spend millions are either dead or dying. But this has hardly to do with the advantages of e-commerce as they faced such crisis because they spent a lot of money on advertising their websites than focusing their attention on the products themselves. While most of the potential customers have just started to think about shopping online, we have to think that E-commerce is a future play, some ecommerce works now, but the best ecommerce is yet to come. The best part of the whole game of establishing your business online is to find a niche in which you have expertise and capitalize on that niche. That is the opportunity for the ecommerce entrepreneur and businesses today are using e-commerce to open their doors to the entire world. People are getting exposed to the real benefits of the e-commerce and it will still take some time before they will find the potential in it than the real commerce. E.g. now it is much easier to book tickets online than talking to a travel agent, similarly one can buy commodities on the net that are not available in the market and similarly one can also pay the bills online to various banks rather by going to the banks themselves.
Not every one can get benefit from the potential that e-commerce is having because of the exposure and the competition there. So, if some one is thinking over an idea to start an e-commerce business than it t is much better to think and plan before actually executing it.
