There are many workouts we can do when looking to improve our health and fitness. Weight training, Interval Training, Walking, Running etc.
Let's take a look at a workout to do at home using only your bodyweight. With all the high tech equipment and revolutionary(supposedly anyway)workout programs sometimes the old tried and true methods work just fine.
Now I'm not saying you are going to build significant muscle or strength with a bodyweight program but if your looking to lose some fat and tone your muscles give bodyweight exercises a try. For someone who hasn't worked out in a while or never a few weeks of a bodyweight program will get your body prepared for taking the next step into a weight training and interval program.
The key to fat loss is to raise your metabolism rate. Doing a bodyweight workout should be done in circuit training style. Circuit training involves doing a group of exercises typically can be from 3-10 exercises one right after the other.
Let's take a look at a 3 exercise bodyweight circuit.
When starting any exercise program first get yourself a physical.
We are going to shoot for 25-30 reps per exercise but don't be afraid to adjust that number down if you have to. If it's been a while or your very out of shape start with 5 reps or whatever you can do and work up to 25-30.
One of the other keys to a workout like this is keeping your rest time between exercises to a minimum. Beginners try 45-60 seconds between exercises. Work up to doing the workout one exercise after the other with no rest in between.
3-4 sets per circuit should help get that metabolism working.
1) Squat Thrusts you remember them from school don't you? Yse it is a great exercise for getting your whole body working.
2) Pushups another old one works your Chest, Triceps and Front Delts.
3) Mountain Climbers or Floor Climbers gets you legs moving and your abs working.
So there you have a quick 3 exercise bodyweight circuit. There are all sorts of exercises you can add and/or substitute a traditional circuit is usually 6-10 exercises but in my opinion it is the work and effort you put in not the amount. In other words think quality not quantity.
