Bichon Frise: Training Your Bichon Frise Sit

18 Feb 2008 04:33:25
| Tom Antion

You probably know by now that your Bichon Frise can be very independent as well as a little shy. The earlier and younger you can begin training your Bichon the better. If you begin your training with simple commands such as sit, stay, come and lie down you and your pet's success rate will be better and more rewarding for both of you. You can always work up to more complex tasks in time.

IAmNotAPoodle.com Be direct; keep it simple and always supportive. Avoid using negative or overly forceful tactics since it could backfire and bring about aggressive behavior. With positive reinforcement, a gentle tone of voice and favorite goodies you'll both enjoy the benefits of effective training. Remember your Bichon Frise is a really smart dog so he/she will be happier and more stimulated to learn new tricks.

Training your Bichon Frise: Sit

Have your pet stand. Grab onto his/her collar and gently push your pet's hindquarters down. Say SIT. REWARD your Bichon for sitting Repeat immediately *Your pet will begin associating the word SIT with you pushing down on his/her hindquarters and soon will begin to sit when you just say SIT

OR...

Again...have your Bichon Frise stand. Hold a doggy treat slightly back and above your pet's nose. Say SIT (Your pet will automatically sit when he/she looks up at the treat. If your Bichon jumps up the treat is too high. If your pet still doesn't sit move the treat farther back over his/her head so that your dog has to tilt his/her head back to get it. Give oodles of Praise and Reward. Repeat Practice until you don't need a treat anymore and your Bichon begins to sit when you just say SIT.
