Your website is like your body, where each part plays a crucial role. The pain of any part of it is felt by the whole. With regards to your web design, you must treat each element with considerable consideration because oblivion of one element may spell disaster.

Many designers are taking for granted the choice of typefaces. This should not be because typefaces contribute to the overall appearance of a web design as well as to the readability of the contents in it. There are more than 20,000 typefaces available nonetheless, the number continues to soar because a lot of designers are designing it day in and day out. With this wide-variety of typefaces where are you suppose to mark your start?

The first thing to do is to narrow down your choices of typefaces. Select only those that support to the elements of your design. Typefaces exude character. They can be as happy and bubbly as teens, as formal and strict as the elderly, as melancholic as the color black, as jolly as the color yellow. Typefaces can be playful, reserved, tricky, confident and the likes therefore, you must select them in accordance with the character they embodies. Otherwise your web design can turn out to be a laughingstock in the Net.

Here are some big NO-NO’s: There are a lot of choices available this is the reason why you have to be extra cautious in choosing your typeface. Do not use ALL CAPS in the entire composition otherwise nobody will be attracted to read it. It will just be a waste of time on their part because they will just get upset in reading it. After all, who wants to make their eyes sore with disappointment? Another no-no is to have the typefaces too tiny that it’s no longer fit for reading and too big that it occupies most of the space intended for graphics and other priorities. The standard measure of font is size 12-14, more or less than prescribed can be a risk to your project.

Aside from the aesthetic value of the typefaces, readability should also be a priority since fonts are intended to be read and not only designed to be an ornament. Comprehension, that’s what typefaces are primarily designed. Other qualities are just next to it. Next to readability and aesthetic quality is the appeal to the target reader. It must be designed so that they can relate with the character that it exudes. Short of it may result to a lacking website.

Bear in mind that you must not use more three than three typefaces in a design. The design may look messy and chaotic. Spacing and word setting should also be taken into consideration to optimize your content.

If you are still unsure of your choice of typefaces, you can consult a professional designer to aid you on your choices. Remember that your typefaces like any other element of a design can break or make it. Now, are you going to take the risks?
